Newborn Portrait Session Prep: How to Prepare for Your Shoot
Expert advice from a premier Wake Forest newborn photographer to ensure a stress-free, successful portrait experience for your family.
Preparing for a new baby is an overwhelming and joyful time. Among the nursery preparation and nesting, many parents book a professional photographer to capture those fleeting first days. To ensure the best possible outcome, newborn portrait session prep should begin before the baby arrives.
I am a specialized Wake Forest newborn photographer who wants every session to be relaxed, safe, and successful. By following these simple preparation guidelines, you can ensure your baby is comfortable and that the resulting images are cherished heirlooms.
Timing is Everything: The First Two Weeks
The most critical aspect of newborn portrait session prep is timing. Professional newborn photographers generally agree that the ideal window for capturing sleepy, curled-up poses is within the first 5 to 14 days of life.
During this timeframe, babies are typically much sleepier, retain their natural “womb-like” curl, and are less likely to be bothered by being undressed or posed. We tentatively schedule your session based on your due date and finalize the exact date once your baby arrives.
Preparing Baby for the Session Day
The goal for the session day is to have a happy, full belly. A well-fed baby is a sleepy baby.
-
The Big Feed: We recommend trying to give the baby a full feeding right before you leave home (or right before Melissa arrives if it is an in-home session).
-
Keep Them Awake: Leading up to the session time, try to keep the baby awake for a little while. A bath, a diaper change, or some tummy time can help ensure they are ready for a long nap once the photography begins.
-
Dress for Success: For the drive to the studio, please dress the baby in loose-fitting clothing. Tight socks or onesies can leave indentations on delicate newborn skin that take time to fade.
Studio Environment and Soothing
Parents often worry about what happens if the baby fusses during the shoot. As an experienced Wake Forest newborn photographer, we are fully prepared for this.
Our studio is kept very warm—around 78-80°F (25-27°C)—to keep the baby comfortable while undressed. Melissa also uses white noise machines to help soothe the baby into a deep sleep. We always follow the baby’s cues. If the baby needs to eat or be comforted, we pause the session. We never rush a newborn.
What to Bring (and What to Wear)
One of the biggest benefits of choosing Melissa Devoe Photography is that we provide a fully stocked studio with high-end, newborn-safe props, wraps, and outfits.
For newborn portrait session prep, you do not need to stress about buying tiny clothes. We simply ask that you bring:
-
Diapers and wipes.
-
A pacifier (even if you don’t plan to use it long-term, it is highly effective for calming the baby quickly during posing transitions).
-
Milk/Formula for feedings throughout the 2-3 hour session.
If siblings or parents are included in the photos, we recommend coordinating outfits in soft neutrals or pastels. Avoid busy patterns or bright logos, which can distract from the baby.
Finalizing Your Preparation
By booking with a professional, you are investing in the preservation of a fleeting time. Proper newborn portrait session prep sets the stage for Melissa Devoe Photography to create stunning, safe, and timeless art for your family.
